Gwangju News Team

The Gwangju News is the first English monthly magazine for the general public in Korea, first published in June 2001. Each monthly issue covers local and regional issues, with a focus on the roles and activities of the international residents and local English-speaking communities. It also contains Korean society, culture, travel, history, and living information. Gwangju News is published by Gwangju International Center (GIC), a Non-Profit Organization for Korean and international residents of Gwangju to join together and collaborate on community building.

MEET THE TEAM

Dr. SHIN GYONGGU, Ph.D. (Publisher)

Dr. Shin has served the Gwangju International Center (GIC) as its volunteer director since 1999, when it was first established. He retired from Chonnam National University in 2013 after teaching there for 31 years. His passion for the community helped the GIC to grow from a one staff member to 21 staff member organization in 20 years. His vision for the international community created and nurtured numerous projects including Gwangju News, which began as the first English monthly for the general public of South Korea in 2001.

Dr. DAVID E. SHAFFER, Ph.D. (Editor-in-Chief)

Dr. Shaffer has been a resident of Gwangju and taught at Chosun University for many years. He has been associated with KOTESOL since its beginnings and is a past president of the organization. WILLIAM URBANSKI (Managing Editor)

William Urbanski, managing editor of the Gwangju News, has an MA in international relations and cultural diplomacy. He is married to a wonderful Korean woman, always pays cash, and keeps all his receipts. He can also eat spicy food. He can be found at Instagram @will_il_gatto.

ISAIAH WINTERS (Chief Copy Editor)

Originally from Southern California, Isaiah is a Gwangju-based urban explorer who enjoys writing about the City of Light’s lesser-known quarters. When he’s not roaming the streets and writing about his experiences, he’s usually working or fulfilling his duties as the Gwangju News’ heavily caffeinated chief copy editor. You can find more of his photography at Instagram @d.p.r.kwangju.

KARINA PRANANTO (Coordinator-in-Charge, Layout Editor, and Online Editor)

Karina Prananto is from Jakarta, Indonesia, and has been living in Gwangju since 2006. She is a special-needs mother, and her hobbies are to travel with her family, read, and watch true crime documentaries.
