V-Day Gwangju (The Vagina Monologues)
“A Memory, A Monologue, A Prayer, and A Rant”
V-Day exists as “a global movement to end violence against women and girls.” And that is exactly the vision of V-day Gwangju’s “A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and a Prayer” (MMRP) participants.
Twenty-five female and male performers will be participating in this special event for the Gwangju community to enjoy. Audience members will feel compelled to rise up against the senseless violence that affects many in the world. Monologues will showcase the courage that can arise from brutality when just one person chooses to say “no” to violence.
Performance dates will be on Saturday, April 4 at 3 and 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 5 at 3 p.m. at Yunbaram Theater. More ticket sales will be announced and posted in the future.
The MMRP cast has been preparing since January 2015 with weekly rehearsals. However, the Gwangju community is invited to be involved with more than just watching one performance. Bi-weekly fundraisers will be held throughout February and March 2015, to help support the three local charities: Our Home, Women’s Hotline and Gwangju Settler Women’s Support Center.
Ynell Lumantao, a previous two-time Vagina Monologues actress, will be directing this production with the help of her assistant director, Calen Cygan, a 2013 Vagina Monologues actress. They will guide the cast and crew members as the group brings the community together, enjoys great activities, and advocates to end the violence starting in Gwangju then reaching out to the world.
Ynell would also like to graciously thank the Gwangju Performance Project for their administrative and counseling assistance along the way, the Gwangju International Center for their space and resource allocation and support in numerous ways, and Our Home, Women’s Hotline and Gwangju Settler Women’s Support Center Charities who have partnered with this year’s MMRP cast and crew.
Come and fight with us as we rise under the banner of “One Billion Rising!”
