Restaurant Review: Al-Aziz – A Taste of Central Asia in the Heart of Gwangju

By Neha Bisht

Tucked away on a quiet street near Chonnam National University, Al-Aziz is one of those rare culinary finds that surprises you the moment you step inside. In a district filled with trendy cafés and Korean eateries, this modest Uzbek restaurant stands out by offering something far more unique – authentic Central Asian comfort food prepared with heart.

Walking into Al-Aziz feels like entering a small cultural crossroads. The atmosphere is simple and unpretentious, yet warm, with the gentle aroma of grilled meat and spices filling the air. The staff greet diners with genuine friendliness – a quality that makes the place feel instantly inviting to both Korean locals and the growing international community around the university.

Flavors That Travel

I visited Al-Aziz with my friends to experience Central Asian cuisine. As a vegetarian, finding suitable food options is often a challenge, but I still decided to join them. To my surprise, the menu offered far more variety than I had expected. It features a wide range of dishes, including soups, assorted platters, salads, cakes, kebabs, and juices, making it appealing to diners with diverse preferences.

The menu at Al-Aziz is a true celebration of Uzbek and broader Middle Eastern cuisine. Their well-known dishes include beshbarmoq (square noodles served with meat), osh or pilov (traditional rice pilaf cooked with meat, vegetables, and spices), kapsa (fragrant rice with meat and a unique blend of spices), tandir somsa (a savory pastry filled with tender meat and onions, baked in a traditional tandir oven), and manti (steamed beef dumplings).

My friends ordered kapsa and kebabs, which brought bold, hearty flavors to the table – perfect for a chilly Gwangju evening. The meats were well-seasoned and tender, and the portions were generous, staying true to Central Asian dining culture. Simple yet fresh vegetarian sides helped balance the richness of the main dishes.

One of the most pleasant surprises was the restaurant’s willingness to accommodate vegetarian requests. When I asked if they could prepare a vegetarian rice, they happily agreed and served it fresh. Along with the rice, I also tried salad, french fries, and cheese balls – all of which were simple, well-prepared, and satisfying.

While Central Asian cuisine is typically meat- heavy, Al-Aziz offers thoughtful vegetarian- friendly options, such as fresh salads, cheese- based snacks, and vegetable dishes, making it an enjoyable experience even for non-meat eaters.

A Hub for International Diners

Given its halal-friendly options and diverse menu, Al-Aziz has become a small but important culinary hub for foreign residents and travelers in Gwangju. Students from Chonnam National University often drop in for a taste of home or to enjoy flavors they might not find elsewhere in the city.

Final Thoughts

If you’re craving something beyond the usual Korean fare or simply want to explore new culinary borders, Al-Aziz is a must-visit. With its generous portions, friendly service, and a menu that transports you straight to the heart of Uzbekistan, it’s a delightful reminder that great food often comes from the most unexpected places.

Perfect for adventurous eaters, international students, halal-friendly dining, and anyone looking for warm, hearty comfort food in Gwangju.
