While many people seem curious about this, there also seems to be some resistance to and stereotypes about couple dance culture. To understand why this is so, and to raise awareness and possibly change perceptions about this social activity, we interviewed Prof. Hong Nam-son for the Gwangju News.
“Sharing is caring” is probably the keystone in the architecture of the precept “Love thy neighbor as thyself.” It may indeed be the beacon-cum-cornerstone for peace on earth and good will all around. Coupled with generosity, charity will transform our surroundings into a paradise on earth. Thus, “sharing is caring” is a fitting call to action for humanitarian volunteers of all stripes.

There are a few weeks left before we say goodbye to 2022. Time flies, as many of us would agree, and many things have happened this year, such as the easing of restrictions for Covid-19, which resulted in the Gwangju International Center (GIC) being able to hold many events that were canceled last year. There are many things to be thankful for this year, but the GIC’s most important possessions – its members – are the ones we are most thankful for!
Stories have played a considerable role over the length of my existence. This includes anecdotes I have heard, accounts I have retold, rumors I have made up, and legends I have believed in. It has been through this affair with the world of storytelling that I grew up believing one day I was going to assemble my own story and share it with everyone. I had absolutely no idea of when or how, but I was convinced it would be epic, much the same as a movie.
It is only a few weeks away from one of the biggest events organized by the Gwangju International Center. Gwangju International Day (or GIC Day) this year has been elevated to Gwangju International Community Week, which will be held from October 11–16 around the Asia Culture Center (ACC) and the Gwangju International Center (GIC).
On the historical grounds of the May 18th square near the Asia Culture Center, the first Refugee Women Bazaar in Gwangju took place. Let me be clear and state that there is a distinct difference between “refugees” and “immigrants.” These women sought refuge in South Korea due to multiple factors ranging from war and political oppression to state-enforced imprisonment. What must be acknowledged is that they ran away from threats. No matter the variables of their individual circumstances, they shared one thought in heart: to seeking a better life.
Eight years have passed since that day. Every year on April 16, the nation solemnly remembers what happened. For most, life goes on, but for many families of the victims, every day is difficult.
Two years after the Sewol ferry disaster, I wrote an energetic and emotional composition on the piano titled “Waves.”
