Eight years have passed since that day. Every year on April 16, the nation solemnly remembers what happened. For most, life goes on, but for many families of the victims, every day is difficult.
Two years after the Sewol ferry disaster, I wrote an energetic and emotional composition on the piano titled “Waves.”
“As if to prove that my days as an American-Korean traveler are not over, I went to Seoul’s express bus terminal on Saturday morning, bellied up to the counter, bought a ticket to Jangheung, and hit the road.”
In the back of each were deep drill holes that likely would have been stuffed with dynamite and blasted away had WWII not ended. Apparently, fearing an American invasion, the Japanese forced local Koreans to make tunnels along coastal areas like Mokpo that could provide shelter, munitions storage, and surprise hideouts in case of enemy attack.
