It’s May again. For many people, May brings forth pleasant thoughts of spring – warm breezes, short sleeves, blossoming flowers, budding trees, outdoor activities, and traveling. This issue of the Gwangju News brings you articles related to these topics.

Welcome to a new month and a new issue of the Gwangju News! The spring month. The month of “April showers [that] bring May flowers.” These words, whose origin date back centuries to a 1610 poem, have never been more appropriate: We need an abundance of April showers this spring to replenish our city’s rapidly depleting water supply. Let us conserve our remaining water this spring so that we have some remaining for the summer.

February is here, the shortest month of the year. But even though it contains fewer days, it is still filled with four full weeks, two of the 24 seasonal terms (Ipchun, “The Coming of Spring,” and Usu, “Spring Rain”), and the sweetest of sweet observances (Valentine’s Day).

December is upon us – the month whose doors close out the year. And what a year it has been! As 2022 has dug us out from under the tyranny of the Covid virus, we have been able to enjoy more of the in-person events that were once so commonplace.

Welcome to November; the penultimate month of the year is here already. The solar term, Ipdong (입동, Onset of Winter) on November 7 reminds us of the coming colder season, and Soseol (소설, Small Snow) of the coming white precipitation. Also here already is the penultimate issue of the Gwangju News for 2022, hopefully bringing you much-desired warmth through its contents to counter the chilling effect of the outside elements.

October is already here! It seems like only yesterday that we were experiencing the greening of spring, followed quickly by the yellow heat of the summer sun. This month brings us the onset of polychromatic autumnal hues, and this October issue of the Gwangju News brings you a colorful variety of news, views, and interviews for our multifaceted readership to peruse.

The revolving door is currently opening on the month of September, allowing in a cooling breeze unfamiliar to the sultry summer. Heralding this cooling are the seasonal terms of White Dew (백로, Sept. 8) and the Onset of Autumn (추분, Sept. 23), and we must not forget the biggest autumnal holiday of all: Chuseok (추석, Sept. 9–12). Coordinating with these seasonal temps, the Gwangju News offers you a “cool” issue of information and enjoyment for the entire month.
