From the Editor: September 2022

The revolving door is currently opening on the month of September, allowing in a cooling breeze unfamiliar to the sultry summer. Heralding this cooling are the seasonal terms of White Dew (백로, Sept. 8) and the Onset of Autumn (추분, Sept. 23), and we must not forget the biggest autumnal holiday of all: Chuseok (추석, Sept. 9–12). Coordinating with these seasonal temps, the Gwangju News offers you a “cool” issue of information and enjoyment for the entire month.

Look Up? Or Don’t Look Up?

Newly elected President Yoon announced that Korea would resume building the two nuclear power plants that Moon had stopped and mentioned ‘pyroprocessing technology’ could be used to solve the nuclear waste problem. At this point, questions arise in times of carbon-neutrality: Is nuclear energy green? Is nuclear energy a shortcut to net-zero emissions? Are there not any other energy solutions?

“Glory to Ukraine!” “Victory Shall Be Ours”

I want to convey to you, our dear beloved Koreans, that Russian troops will not defeat our country; victory shall be ours. And it will be a victory for the entire civilized world. This will be a victory for your beautiful country as well. We think that you know well what a war or union with a “brotherly” people is. We have a national slogan, or rallying cry, in Ukraine; we say, “Glory to Ukraine!” And the reply is “Glory to the heroes!”
