Twice: From Biggest Tour to Solo Projects
By Paul Singh ||
Formed in 2015, the K-pop girl group Twice debuted nine members: Nayeon, Momo, Jeongyeon, Sana, Jihyo, Dahyun, Mina, Tyuzu, and Chaeyeong. They have visited approximately 19 countries in Southeast Asia, Europe, and North America as well as Japan and Australia. Twice (often stylized in all caps: TWICE) concluded their biggest global tour in July this year. The “This Is For” World Tour, which began in July 2025, had a total of 2 million attendees with 550,000 in North America alone.
The group originated from a TV reality competition called Sixteen that involved many trainees of JYP Entertainment. The name “Twice” refers to making an impact once through the ears and once through the eyes. Twice held their first concerts in Taipei, Macao, and Kaohsiung along with being the first girl group to perform at Kai Tak Stadium in Hong Kong.
While they were in Japan in April 2026, they were the first K-pop group to enter Tokyo National Stadum and had 240,000 people gather in three days of concerts, achieving over 640,000 attendees during the Japan leg of their “This Is For” World Tour. Referring to a performance during the New York stage of their tour, Rolling Stone Korea wrote, “Jihyo’s relentless energy stood out as she poured everything into both choreography and vocals, ultimately losing her voice by the show’s end.”
Twice made their debut with the song “Like OOH-AAH” in October 2015, with their hit “Cheer Up” making a breakthrough in 2016. Their biggest hits are “TT” (2016), “What Is Love?” (2018), “Feel Special” (2019), “I Can’t Stop Me” (2020), and “The Feels” (2021).
Four members of the group, Nayeon, Jihyo, Chaeyoung, and Tyuzu, also have solo projects to explore their music styles and creative identities.
In 2022, Nayeon released the EP I’m Nayeon, which features the song “Pop!” and two years later, she released her second EP, NA, featuring “ABCD” and other singles like “Bye Bye Inhibitions” with Brazilian DJ Alok.
Jihyo released her solo mini-album Zone with the title track “Killin’ Me Good” in 2023 along with her latest single “Distant Lover” with Shenseea. And in 2024, Tyuzu debuted with the lead single “Run Away,” featured on her solo EP abouTZU.
In 2025, Chaeyoung released her solo debut album Lil Fantasy Vol 1 and participated in the soundtrack for the cartoon KPop Demon Hunters along with Jeongyeon and Jihyo in the end credits version of the song “Takedown,” while other versions of the song featured other K-pop singers like Rei Ami, Ejae, and rapper Audrey Nuna.
While they are still a group, two members have decided to leave JYP Entertainment. Jeongyeon has decided to depart JYP after an 11-year relationship with the agency to start a new chapter in her career and pursue acting. She is the first member to leave the agency since Twice’s debut.
However, while she has left JYP Entertainment, she confirmed that she will not be leaving Twice and will be engaged in the group’s activities under a “separate but together” management model. In August, she signed with an agency that specializes in acting and content production, VARO Entertainment, which also represents her older sister Gong Seung-yeon. Jeongyeon was looking for an agency that supported the “separate but together” model which VARO allowed.
Jeongyeon is set to star in a movie, “New Recruit: The Movie,” a horror-comedy film based on the series with the same name, set in a military hospital. “Particularly in this film, Twice’s Jungyeon draws attention by joining as Nurse Officer Yoo Jung-yeon. As this marks her first screen challenge, expectations are high for a fresh transformation and new charm unseen before,” The Chosun Daily reports.
However, even though these five members are pursuing solo projects and other creative opportunities such as acting, they are still in the group.
Chaeyoung also left JYP Entertainment three days after Jeongyeon, after being with the agency for 14 years.
On YouTube, BTS and Blackpink are the only K-pop groups that have more lifetime views than Twice. However, as they started to rise to fame and started topping charts in South Korea, they also found success in Japan, attracting hundreds of thousands to their concerts.
In addition, Twice was the first group recognized by the K-pop community to discuss the topic of mental health, which is a subject that remains somewhat of a taboo in Asia as mental health services are limited in China and South Korea.
They set themselves apart from other groups with their colorful style, cheerful tunes, and individual colors. Their title tracks practically always go viral as the group’s members take part in the latest trends online.
Most recently, JYP Entertainment organized the 2026 TWICE Fan Party “ONCE Upon a THRI11” on October 17 in celebration of the group’s 11th anniversary. Only official ONCE fan club members could enter the lottery to attend. The group’s 2027 Season’s Greetings package, titled Spotless, will be available ahead of the new year. Also, in members’ upcoming plans are expanded solo opportunities; sub-unit projects, such as the one planned by MISAMO (Mina, Sana, and Momo); and even acting roles.
