D’s Café Column: Let’s Jazz It Up – A Little Change from My Usual Café Reviews

Usually, I write about cafés. Cozy interiors, good coffee, and hidden gems around the city have always been my thing. But this time, I wanted to switch things up and introduce a place that offers something a little different. If you’re looking for an evening that’s less about scrolling through your phone and more about simply soaking in the moment, let me introduce you to In the Groove Jazz Bar.

Tucked away in Gwangju, this charming little jazz bar feels like stepping into another era. The moment I walked in, I found myself looking around instead of reaching for the menu. Every corner seemed thoughtfully decorated with vintage lamps, ceramic vases, antique ornaments, framed portraits, violins, old books, and photographs of legendary jazz musicians. It didn’t feel like a typical bar. It felt like someone had collected beautiful memories over the years and decided to share them with everyone.

One thing to keep in mind before visiting is that reservations are essential. The venue has a limited number of seats, and it’s easy to see why they fill up quickly. The intimate setting is part of what makes the experience so special, allowing everyone to truly enjoy the music without distractions.

Speaking of music, live performances are held on selected evenings, and they are definitely the highlight of the visit. To watch a performance, there’s a 10,000 won cover charge, payable by either cash or bank transfer. Personally, I think it’s well worth it. You’re not just paying for entertainment; you’re supporting local musicians while enjoying live jazz in such a cozy atmosphere.

Even if jazz isn’t something you normally listen to, I’d still recommend giving it a chance. There’s something incredibly relaxing about sitting under warm lights while live music fills the room. Conversations become quieter, time slows down, and for a little while, the outside world doesn’t seem quite so busy.

I walked in expecting good music but left remembering the atmosphere just as much. From the carefully curated vintage décor to the intimate performances, In the Groove offers an experience that’s difficult to find elsewhere.

So yes, this may be a break from my usual café reviews, but sometimes the best discoveries happen when you decide to try something completely different. If you’re in Gwangju and looking for a unique way to spend an evening, make a reservation, bring a friend, and let the jazz do the rest.
