D’s Café Column: Mi Mill – A Cozy Café with Naturally Fermented Bread
Tucked away in Gwangju’s Yongbong-dong area of Buk-gu, Mi Mill is a small and cozy café that feels calm from the moment you arrive. It is a nice place to study quietly, spend time alone, or meet a friend without too much noise. Unlike many busy cafés, Mi Mill has a peaceful atmosphere, which makes it easy to sit for a while and enjoy your drink or food.
The most special thing about Mi Mill is its bread. The café does not use yeast in the bread-making process. Instead, it uses natural fermentation starter and rice yogurt made from fermented rice nuruk. According to the sign outside the café, the dough is also fermented at a low temperature for 18 hours. This gives the bread a healthier and more natural taste. For people who are interested in handmade food or healthier bakery options, this makes the café stand out.
Mi Mill also offers sandwiches, bagels, croissants, and coffee. When I visited, there was an event for sandwich and Americano sets, as well as a morning discount for hot or iced Americano. These small deals make it a good stop for breakfast or a light meal. The café feels especially suitable for a slow morning, when you want something simple, warm, and comforting.
The owner was also very kind and friendly, which made the visit feel even warmer. She explained that the bread-making process is inspired by European-style bread, where slow fermentation is important for deeper flavor and better texture.
Another charming part of Mi Mill is the handmade items inside the shop. They sell hand-crafted products, including embroidery items, which gives the café a personal and artistic feeling. It does not feel like a regular chain café.
Instead, it feels like a place made with care, from the bread to the decoration.
Overall, Mi Mill is a lovely café for anyone looking for a quiet space in Gwangju. Its naturally fermented bread, cozy mood, and handmade details make it memorable. If you enjoy calm cafés with character, Mi Mill is worth visiting.
