D’s Café Column: Café Low Shift – A Late-Night Escape Near CNU
By Dhivyaa S. P. ||
Located in Gwangju’s Buk-gu area, Low Shift stands out not just because of its menu but because of its timing and atmosphere. The café operates until 3 a.m., making it a rare spot in the city where the night still feels alive.
The first thing you notice when you walk in is the vibe. It leans rustic, with wooden textures, barrel-like elements, and even boat paddle-style décor that gives the place a slightly offbeat charm. It does not feel like a typical café. It feels more like a space that shifts depending on the time of day, which probably explains the name.
Despite the relaxed setting, the place is almost always full. I have visited twice, and both times, it was close to packed. There is a steady flow of students, friends, and late-night visitors, especially given its proximity to the university.
Low Shift offers a wide range of options. Along with regular coffee, non-coffee drinks, and tea, they also serve desserts and alcohol. That mix itself makes it stand out. Some of the popular highlights include ube-based drinks like ube latte and desserts such as Basque cheesecake and amaretti. The menu feels experimental but still approachable. Even if you go in for something simple like coffee, it is tempting to try something different.
Another practical advantage is accessibility. The café has both ground and basement parking, which makes it easier for visitors coming by car. But more than convenience, what stays with you is the overall experience. It is not overly loud, not too quiet either. Just enough energy to sit, talk, or simply observe.
If you are near Chonnam National University, Low Shift is definitely worth visiting at least once. From short coffee runs to unplanned late-night stays, it settles into whatever moment you bring with you.
