Finding “Our Time”: A Riverside Respite
By Siddhant K. ||
As a café explorer, I often find that the best spots aren’t just about the beans; they’re about the way a space makes you feel. Tucked away near the serene banks of the Yeongsan River on the outskirts of Gwangju, Café Our Time (아워타임) is a hidden gem that feels like a slow, deep breath of fresh air. If you are looking for a getaway from the urban rush of Gwangju or the industrial pace of Naju’s Innovation City, this is where you should point your compass. Here is my take on why Our Time deserves a spot on your weekend itinerary.
The Location: A Riverside Sanctuary
Located just a stone’s throw from the Yeongsan River, Our Time benefits from one of the most scenic backdrops in Jeollanam-do. The area is famous for its vast cycling paths and the seasonal blooms: canola flowers in spring and silver grass in autumn. The café acts as the perfect pitstop for weary cyclists or couples looking for a romantic stroll before settling in for a brew. It embodies exactly what its name suggests, a dedicated slice of the day carved out for yourself or loved ones. The interior leans toward cozy minimalism with warm lighting, comfortable seating, and thoughtful details that make you want to linger. Think wooden accents, soft textures, and large windows that frame the riverside scenery.

It’s not overly loud or trendy in a flashy way; instead, it feels intimate and welcoming. On weekdays, it’s perfect for remote work or reading with a view. Weekends might see more visitors soaking in the relaxed atmosphere, but it rarely feels overly crowded. The overall ambiance is calm and unpretentious – think gentle background music, the aroma of fresh brews, and that satisfying sense of “this is my time now.”
The Cozy Atmosphere: Warmth in Every Corner
The moment you push open the door, the name makes sense. The interior is designed to make you feel like time has slowed down. With a soft “black and bricky” European aesthetic, the café is bathed in natural light through large windows that frame the surrounding greenery like living paintings.
It strikes that rare balance: It’s “Instagrammable” with its minimalist decor and curated plants, yet it feels genuinely cozy. It’s the kind of place where you don’t feel rushed to leave; instead, you’re encouraged to linger over a book or a long conversation.

Beyond the minimalist glass of the interior, the outdoor seating at Our Time offers a masterclass in rustic elegance. The floor is blanketed in a crunch of grey gravel, creating a tactile connection to the riverbank just beyond the fence. Massive, ancient trees provide a natural canopy, their gnarled trunks acting as pillars that frame the view of the Yeongsan River winding through the verdant Naju plains. Underneath these giants, clusters of white garden furniture and forest-green umbrellas are scattered with a casual, unhurried grace. It is a space designed for the elements, where the breeze off the water carries the scent of fresh grass and the dappled sunlight plays across your table. Whether you’re watching the slow movement of the river or tucked away near the charming vintage caravan parked on the periphery, the outdoor area transforms the simple act of drinking coffee into an immersive, open-air retreat.

The Menu: Crafting the Perfect Moment
While the views move you through the pristine green hills, the menu keeps you in your seat. Our Time is known for its thoughtful approach to both coffee and treats. Their blends and lattes are exceptionally smooth, often topped with thick, velvety cream that pairs perfectly with the view. For those who prefer something refreshing, their seasonal fruitades, made with fresh ingredients, are a vibrant tribute to the agricultural richness of Gwangju’s outskirts.
The Explorer’s Verdict
What sets Our Time apart isn’t just the aesthetic; it’s the hospitality. There is a quiet pride in the way the coffee is poured and the space is maintained. It feels less like a commercial enterprise and more like a shared secret between the owner and the visitors.
Best For…

Pro Tip: If you visit during the spring, grab your coffee to go and walk toward the Yeongsan Riverbank. The combination of Our Time’s brew and the yellow canola fields is the ultimate experience.
